As I sat in my apartment changing the strings on my guitar the Holy Spirit whispered so clearly to me reminding me that just as there at times I have to change the strings on my guitar so must I do with "strings of my heart". As soon as the Holy Spirit uttered this to me, I begin to write this moment so I could share it with you.
As an instrument, the strings on a guitar naturally begin to fade and corrode over time from use. The strings become rusty from the natural oils and sweat that produces from the fingers of the player. They also become out of tune due to tension as pressure is placed on the strings and they tighten and loosen. In the same way, our thoughts can become out of tune from God’s Word and rusty from the cares of life and need to be tuned up and set back into proper alignment. As we encounter the everyday pressures of life and the disappointment of certain moments, our souls can become pained, and if we are not bringing that pain before God for healing and refining, our speech and responses may become noticeably out of tune.
If the strings are left unattended and not changed, they not only cause pain to the fingers of the player but they can break because of the tension and the poor shape they’re in. In the same way, when we don't upgrade our heart and our thinking we cause damage to ourselves and others because we are in pain yet not allowing God to deal with the root and bring true deliverance and healing. There is a necessary pressure and pain when the strings are being changed but when the pressure subsides and the work is finished, let a glorious sound come forth!
The beauty in this is that after you change the strings on that instrument, the sound is so much clearer. It becomes earthy and warm again as it is intended to sound. In the same way, as we tune up the strings of our heart, mind, and soul by leaning into the presence and Word of God, the sound that projects from us toward our family, friends, coworkers, and strangers becomes much more vibrant and loving.
As you go through challengess, pressure and frustrations in life, remember to cast your cares upon the Lord and refine the strings of your heart!
